Before going to Phi Phi Island we thought this is just like some island hopping trip, but since we look deeper into Phi Phi island's detail we find that Phi Phi island is like another town of its own different from Patong Beach.

*Phi Phi Don, the larger one of the two with an abundance of fine beaches and accommodation to suit all needs. The more geographically dramatic,

*Phi Phi Leh, with its cliffs, natural caves and water-filled canyon offers the tourists exciting and outdoor pursuits.
**Both islands are in Krabi province and are part of Hat Nopparat Thara/Koh Phi Phi Natioanl Marine Park, about 42 Kilometers south of Phuket.

*There are more than 100 hotels on Phi Phi island itself.

Transportation to Phi Phi Island
*Public Ferry
**We can get to Phi Phi Island using a cheaper way of transport - Ferry. It takes about 2 hours from Phuket to Phi Phi Island, Tonsai Bay. It takes 1 hour to get from Phuket Airport to the Phuket Ferry Pier (Rassada Pier).
**Phi Phi Island hotel transfer from Patong Beach with shared van and ferry about THB500.
**The morning Ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi also takes a short sightseeing trip around Phi Phi Ley Island for about 30 minutes before arriving at Tonsai Bay where the main Phi Phi Pier is located.

Daily Phi Phi Ferry Times
*To Phi Phi Island from Phuket Pier
**08.30 | 13.30 | 14.30

*From Phi Phi Island from Phuket Pier
**09.00 | 14.30

*Speed Boat
**We can be more flexible in time if we opt for private speed boat. It takes only 45 minutes to reach Phi Phi Island. Speedboats depart from Phuket between 07:00 and 16:30 as they prefer to get back before nightfall.

seasons
*For first timer its easier to try whitewater rafting in the dry season as you don't have to fight the current. Rafters will have to use smaller rafts in the dry season cause the current is not strong enough to carry the bigger raft.
*During the raining season, (only for experts) it would be very exciting time for whitewater rafting, as the current becomes stronger and sometimes the river will become grade V which is very strong.

IMPORTANT
*All participants will be required to sign a Liability Release before departure.
*Children below 12 years may participate with parents or legal guardians .
*Participants must be physically fit.
*Jewellery & Contact lenses are not encouraged.

What to bring to water rafting
*Change of clothes, Towel, Shoes, Slippers, Sun block.

International Grading Scale of River Difficulty

*Grade I - Moving water with a few waves and small ripples.
*Grade II Easy rapids with waves up to 1 meter and wide, clear, channels that are obvious without scouting. Some maneuvering is required.
*Grade III Rapids with high, irregular waves often capable of swamping an open canoe. Narrow passages that often require complex maneuvering.Rapids may require scouting from shore. Boaters in kayaks should have the ability to Eskimo Roll.
*Grade IV Long, difficult rapids with constricted passages and often turbulent waters. Scouting from shore is necessary, and conditions make rescue difficult. Generally not possible for open canoes. Boaters in kayaks should have the ability to Eskimo Roll.
*Grade V Extremely difficult, long and very violent rapids. Highly congested routes which always should be scouted from shore. Rescue conditions are difficult, and there is significant hazard to life in the event of a mishap. Ability to Eskimo roll is essential for boaters in kayaks.
*Grade VI Water is at the extremes of navigability. Nearly impossible and very dangerous. For teams of experts only. Close study must be made ahead of time and all precautions taken.
Brief Introduction

*Christ Church was formerly the Dutch Reformed Church of Melaka. It is the oldest surviving Dutch church building found outside the Netherlands. Located opposite the Stadthuys, it was once situated within the ford walls of the old fortified town of Melaka. The fort walls were demolished by the British at the biginning of the 19th century.

*In 1741, in commemoration of the centenery of the Dutch capture of Melaka from the Portuguese, the Dutch burgher comminity there decide to build a new house of worship to replace their old and decaying church- the Bovenkerk - located at the summit of St. Paul's hill.
*Ever heard of whitewater rafting? If you know and heard of it, or even seen it on movies or over the web, will ever consider trying it? Desmond-t seriously recommends this extreme sport to those who are willing to face endurance challenge and mind-boggling drops at various levels of creeks.

In Malaysia, we are blessed with a handful of places where you can enjoy whitewater rafting. Many of you may have heard of the one in Taman Negara Pahang, Sg. Kampar (Gopeng, Perak), Sg. Padas (Sabah) and many more in East Malaysia. For us up in Northern Malaysia, Sungai Sedim is the perfect place for beginners, intermediate novices and even experts in whitewater rafting.

So, what makes Sg. Sedim so outstanding for whitewater rafting? It boosts for the best rafting experience for different level of difficulties, so it’s suitable for various groups people. Unlike other rivers in Malaysia whereby the water is brown in colour (just like Teh Ais colour!), the rapid water in Sg. Sedim is crystal clear!

It depends on the raining season and the water volume of the river actually varies the level of difficulty. This is my second time here and this time around, the water level is much higher compared to my previous visit. In short, it is gonna be a more challenging ride, a faster raft speed, more dangerous drops and above all, more excitement! If the water volume is low, you’ll be expecting more rocky bumps and slower raft speed. Kinda frustrating though.

Off we go to rafting now! As you can see, the raft guides are gearing us up with protective gears like the essential life jacket, helmets and pumping up the raft. Each raft actually costs around RM15k and it fits up to 6 rafters.

Before we start rafting, a basic “water confidence” test was conducted whereby every rafter must jump into the deep shallow creek from the rocks about 2-3 meters high. You must be able to face the fear and most of all avoid yourself from being panic and be able to float and swim yourself to the river side. Rescue rope was thrown at us and we were drag to the river bank.

Briefing was given by the skipper of each raft and we were taught on how to raft correctly and how to save ourselves from potential danger. Everything seems easy before we stepped into the boat. All were still in joyous mode. I knew deep in my heart that today is gonna be a very bumpy ride!

Look at how fast the water flow, my adrenaline already began to pump up!

Off we go to the first trial before we venture downstream. The skippers trained our three rafts to control the raft manoeuvre. “Forward!… Backward!…” were the common command lines. ”Boom!” means it’s time to slip ourselves inside the raft and hold on the raft tightly. It is not easy especially to raft against the stream and going upstream.

Soon, all three rafts were prepared for the “real deal”. Boom! we went down and everyone has got a very unpleasant first drop. From the third raft, Mr. Smallface fell out of the boat and from the first raft, it was a close call from hitting onto the rocks. Everyone’s alert now. Danger ahead. From my first rafting experience, not much pictures were taken mainly because we don’t have a photographer with us.

But this time, we got one of the budak kampung, who is also a “pro” raft guide with us by the riverbank. He went all the way running throw the jungle and slopes to capture our moments.

After “Boom” and “Booms” and “BOOMS”, here we reached the Level 3 Elbow Falls - the first major drop of the adventure ride. As we were still beginners, we’re all going down without our paddle as it might seem too dangerous if we misplaced our paddles at your friends face when you’re out-of-control!

Thanks to our cameraman, we got all 3 videos of the massive drop well documented. This time, I finally made a perfect drop, without CAPSIZING our raft (I had a wonderful experience we my raft capsized previously). Frankly speaking, the water level is so high that the drop seems to be less “high” thus lowering the level of difficulty from Level 4 to Level 3.

From the picture, you may say this is pretty easy. But if you are standing at the rocks up there, I bet your balls would shrink by the minute. Water’s so cold, knee’s weak and arms are heavy…

All of us celebrated our successful ride, without realizing how much danger was in place for us next. The Kiss Drop - Level 3.5 follows suit. We were all in high spirits and “Naaaahh…Just bring it!” we yelled. It is called the “Kiss Drop” because upon going down the river, the boat would inevitably “kiss” a hug rock in the middle of the drop, thus rendering the raft to go sideways and a very high chance of being capsized.

Team 2 we down first without any problems. They were straight on the mark and all of them shouted for joy. Unluckily, my raft had a different story.

As you can see, Swee Heng lost his control when our raft hit directly on top of the huge rock. He delivered me a knock-out blow and both of us fell into the rapid water. You can see my head (wearing the blue helmet) and myself struggling to hang on. But a 500N force is a lil bit too much and of I went for another adventure.

The river is so rapid that I can’t really find my way up and gasping for air. Seriously, in the water, all I can see is bubbles and bubbles only. Gripping tight to my paddle and I slowly kicked myself up to the river side. Thank God both of us are save and the budak kampung were already anticipating us at a lower point, just in case any accidents happen. I’d rate it overall… still safe for a fun ride!

Not long after that, we’d reach the end checkpoint and all the rafts were toppled and rafters overthrown into the water. It is a nice place for picnic, simple water activities like tubing and jumping off the bridge. We did jumped our way of the bridge platform and performed silly poses.

Overall this rafting adventure last slightly more than 2 hours, as compared to my previous 3 hours adventure. If you are looking for more fun, there’s another full package which costs around RM250 for a 6 hours adventure plus this 3 hour adventure as warm-up. A worthy deal considering it is inclusive of a night stay at the camping area with food provided.

You must be looking for contacts and more info right? Here you go.

My package is a simple 3 hour rafting which usuall cost RM120 with lunch and certificate provided. (If you are lucky, you may get a RM100 deal) For my case, I considered myself lucky already since we used their facilities to camp a night there with them providing generator’s electricity and their kitchen facilities. What’s more when we were given a FREE tubing course! All for RM120, after I bargained down from RM160.

Joes blog
*Near Machang, Kelantan - It was actually kinda late for us to go waterfall hunting for the day, but since we don't get many opportunities to visit Kelantan, we've decided to give it a go, even though it was raining quite heavily earlier. It was quite easy to find this waterfall park, plenty of signages and again. Since it wasn't a holiday, there were no visitors and the place looked empty when we arrived. It seemed that a lot of work were currently being put into upgrading this park, and I assumed that on weekends, this place is THE place to go to. A very popular place for the locals and facilities like toilets, showers, huts, prayer halls, cafes and even a mini zoo! can be expected here for a perfect day out with the family.

*The swimming area at this part of the stream was large and sandy.. a safe depth for children with slow flowing water.. There were also camping facilities, huts and BBQ pits, and I also noticed that there were a few light bulbs among the tress, giving the impression that the park has its visitors at night and well lighted.

Dennys blog
Made the second attempt for Cemperoh on Saturday after failing to complete it on February (More Details here). This time we were more prepared, all thanks to Aurelius efforts in getting a better and more detailed description of the trail, yet the chances of getting lost is still high and I must say that this has to be one of the most challenging trail I had ever done.
The first leg of the trail involves walking across a massive vegetable farm and an open field for 45 minutes to an hour, the reason why this is a torture is that there were no cover from the sun and the trail were mostly uphill climbs, the open field (full of bushes) after the farm was even more of a torture all thanks to its thick and thorny overgrowth, trying to cut our way through is a waste of effort because it will be slow and will waste valuable body energy, no complains thou. never expect a walk in the park with this bunch of suckers for pain.

After walking pass the open field we found "Hope", a real jungle trail which spells the end of the thorns and the hot sun. Yet we have another 2 problems, first is that we are still unsure about the track that we are taking and the next one is leeches, there were unbelievable amount of leeches for this track (according to some of the group members), While most of the group were pulling off and killing the leeches, Linus was the only one who is weird to allow the leeches to cling on to him and suck his blood until it is full, his reason to this is funny thou.
"We are visitors to their home, you don't go to some one's home and kill them." - Linus
Quite true but that's the reason why there were 3 leeches up in his pants, plus we also don't suck our guests blood when they come to our home too.
I don't know why but for some reasons I didn't get any leech bite on me.
After a while I noticed that along the trail that we are taking has a long water pipe, which heads back to the farm, at that point we were still unsure of the path we still can't hear the waterfall and we were no where near a river, but following the water pipe makes a whole lot of sense because it must lead to a water source, even if it leads us to a river it will be safe for us because the river will eventually leads us to the waterfall.
Not long after following the water pipe, we discovered a marker (a red and white ribbon which tells you that you are on the right track). It was such a relief to know that we are on the right track that point on it was looking out and checking for marker after marker and before we know it, we hear the sound of water flowing and there is was...

The whole group excited with the waterfall walk towards it without waiting after waiting like 10 or 15 minutes trying get everyone together to take a nice group picture.
After resting, chilling, swimming and cam whoring for a little more then an hour someone suggest to head back home, I wanted to stay longer because I still don't feel satisfied, I feel that for the effort of tracking for the past 2 hours, even thou we did stay a bit longer but I still wished the the group spent more time relaxing and enjoying the beauty of the reward.
A video of this trip will be release soon.
Micheals blog
Our task for the day to find Chemperoh Waterfalls which was described as a difficult falls hidden in Janda Baik. Our previous attempt two weeks ago was thwart by rain because we had to do a river crossing. We rendezvous at the Shell Station in Gombak at 7.00 a.m. and as usual there were stragglers. By 7.45 am, most of us have arrived but we still had to wait for a first timer who couldn’t find the place. Five cars proceeded to the Genting Sempah rest stop while one car continued waiting for the first timer. She finally arrived at 8.00 a.m. We then sped to Genting Sempah to join up with the rest only to be told that we have to wait for another car which was coming directly to meeting point. So there we were, 32 adults gathering outside the Macdonald’s waiting for one person. The boys started some street dancing to pass time while one innovative lass opened up the boot of the car and stretched herself horizontally for a rest. The rest of with nothing to do, starting taking her pictures and soon she was in the center spot.

Hurray at last the 33rd trekker arrived at 9.00 a.m. and we get to start.

We then found out that our leader, Joe left her GPS at home and we had to go in blindly. Well, that would make the trek even more exciting. I took the lead and led the convoy of 7 cars to the point where we abandoned our attempt two weeks ago. Joe expressed that we will use the farm route instead of crossing the river where one of the locals told us to. So Leo led the way and we started trekking up a very steep farm trail.

After about 500 meters continues climb, Leo told us to turn back. He felt that it was not the way and one lady who had trekked from Gunung Nuang to Janda Baik told us of another trek where she had passed a waterfalls. We decied to use her way. So it back to the cars. We had to drive to another part of Janda Baik.

After parking our cars in the second stop, we did a river crossing and reached a lush farm land. One of the trekker then decided not to continue and told everyone, he wants to go home. His four companions did not want to follow him so we will have to distribute his companions into the remaining vehicles for the return journey. Anyway, one abandonment ain’t gonna to spoil the journey. While the companions returned to the car to transfer their stuff to other vehicles, I took the opportunity to enjoy the beatiful farm scene. One group started trekking and left a trail of paper for the rest to follow.

I was really enjoying the fresh air and the scenery until I came to a fork. There was no paper trail. Harris, Sam and Diana was with me. Harris went ahead to check and returned to confirm there was no trail and advised to turn back.

We then turned back and finally found the paper trail in small fork which I had missed earlier. The trail is another climb through farm country. Soom we caught up with Joe who was the sweeper. She was surprised to see us as we were ahead of her. We trek about an hour through farms before we reached the edge of the jungle.

The trek through the jungle was pleasant as it provided us a more varied terrain and not to mention beautiful fauna and flora along the way like the beautiful wild ginger flower. We continued on the jungle trail for 45 minutes before we could hear the sound of rushing water. The last stretch was a steep down hill all the way to the river. Once we reached the river, we could see the waterfalls some 150 meters away. We waded through the river to reach the falls.

The most intersting characteristic of this falls is the giant red boulder at the bottom of the falls.

Well, it was another good workout for the day and another waterfalls conquered.
I went to Chemperoh Falls last weekend. Thinking it wss not so difficult, I was shocked to see the route to get to the waterfall. And the worst part was I came unprepared. Anyway, you can only use a 4WD up until the river and the the trekking begins. It was raining at that time and wlaking through the mud was a challenge. It got worst when we started trekking up the hill. Thank god we hired a guide to cleared a great deal of obstacles for us. However, 15 minutes before reaching the waterfall, it rained quite heavily and the guide advised us on the possibility that the trees may collaspe if we continued. We decided that safety is more importantand we headed back without seeing the waterfall. Now I know that when its said it's "Difficult", it really is difficult.
*We left KL in a convoy at 3.00 am. Since we were all coming from different parts of the city, we all met up at the Rawang R&R to group up before heading out to Sitiawan. The journey there was quite fast and very uneventful.

We arrived at Sitiawan town at around 6.00 am. We met up with a another angler who was joining us from Ipoh. We had breakfast at a mamak shop and took the opportunity to take some pictures and pop some sea sickness pills.

From the mamak shop, we all proceeded to Leasure Bay where we would be boarding the boat from. I took this opportunity to tie my leader. I was in such a rush that I didn't have time to do any prior rig tying at home. The boat that we were going to board was the best so far that I have encountered. I would say that this is the perfect type of boat for all offshore fishing.

We board the boat at approximately 7.45am. One this that I can tell you that this boat was SUPER fast. The boat ride itself was a thrill. Half way to our first fishing spot, the weather started to change. It was raining and the rain was quite heavy. The boatman slowed his boat down and asked Vincent if he wants to proceed with the journey or turn back. We all decided to proceed. Thankfully we made the right decision. The rain was on at that particular area. when we arrived at the first spot, it was bright and sunny.

The first spot that the boatman went was near and island. This spot was quite rocky. The boatman told us to do casting, and soon all of us were casting different types of lures towards the rocky shores, hopeing to strike it big. We all tried everything we had; poppers, deep divers, shallow divers, spoon, bulu-bulu, and even jigs. I can't really remember if we had any catch at the first spot. After some time, the boatman decided to move on to a different spot.

The second spot was more productive. This was where I got hit on my jig. The feeling was awsome. This is my first jigging trip and the first time that I got something on jig. The feeling is beyond words.... All of us managed to land fish here. Well, almost all lar... Hehehe... When the bite died down, we moved on to a different spot. The boatman had a lot of spots for us to try out our jigs. I was trully impressed with this boatman. Very professional and very hardworking.

We fished till about 6.30pm and decided to return to shore. We reached the shore at about 7.00pm. We were all salty, burnt, tired but happy. Only when we reached the shore we decided to take a peek into our coolerbox to see what the damage was like. I would say that this trip was quite a good trip.
*We caught the speedboat over, which was indeed extremely speedy, although a consequence of this was that it catapaulted us through the water in a roller-coaster-esque fashion, resulting in everyone's bags being soaked. When nearing the island, we realized we had no idea about any of places on it, and even less of an idea where we should get off. So we just stayed on, following the lead of the majority of people on the boat, which thus left us to get off at Salang Beach, which was thankfully the most popular. Saying that, you can walk the length of the beach and the settlements in about 30 mins. This did feel like quite a long time as we dragged our bags up the beach in an attempt to find some accomodation. This was hardly an ordeal, however, as we found a little hut with a double bed, mossie net, and bathroom right on the beachfront, for 20 Ringit a night at Ella's Place.
*Immediately we set out in search of a dive centre to enquire about undertaking our advanced water course (bitten by the dive bug!). There were quite a few on offer, but Fisherman Dive Centre enticed us - Mazlan, the instructor, signed us up for a course that we could start the next day, and with only us on it, for the meagre price of 700 Ringit. Awesome! He gave us our text books, which we diligently set about reading, along with books we'd hired for a stupidly low price from a bookshop. Firstly we had to find an appropriate paradisical setting, however. We decided Monkey Bay was a good enough option - reachable only by water taxi, or a slightly treacherous hill climb and then descent. There wasn't a decision to be made - we ploughed up the hill, in boiling weather once again, with the additional error of wearing flip flops and thus slipping everywhere.
*The bay was completely worth it, paradisical in every sense; practically deserted, with calm, emerald green waves lapping the white sand, tickling our feet as we lay in the sand. The heat was frazzling me so I swiftly moved into a hammock, conveniently hanging under a tree, and began reading and soaking up the serenity of it all. Despite the shade, I reckoned intermittant dips in the sea were still necessary to keep cool, and the water was beautiful, but incredibly salty!
*We opted to head back to watch the sunset from Salang beach, but the clouds put pay to that idea, and instead we had to settle for watching giant lizards crawl in and out of the small stream running parallel with the sea. We then went for dinner at one of the few restaurants on the beach, at which I made the schoolboy error of ordering a curry way too hot for me to devour, much to both mine and the waiter's evident disappointment!
*The next day marked the first day of our advanced open water course. I began to appreciate the facilities of the Koh Tao dive centre as we had to kit up on the floor of a tiny dive boat, rocking from side to side in the open sea, and then enter the water while precariously balanced on a ridge delineating the boat's sides. The first dive was our deep dive (30m) at Fan Canyon. 30m is the depth that nitrogen narcosis can supposedly occur, causing divers to undertake foolish behaviour, and thus at 30m we performed a maths calculation to show us how our thought processes are slower at that depth. Lucy got hers wrong anyway, so I guess it affected one of us :P The vis was pretty good down there actually, and we saw some good coral. Between this dive and our second, the multi-level dive, we had lunch - awesome noodles! - and then moved over to Kador Bay near Coral Island. The second dive was really good also, I really felt like I was getting way more used to being underwater now, plus we saw a moray eel. Back on the boat I was starting to get a bit seasick so was relieved when we arrived back on shore. In the evening we were joined by a Malaysian bloke, Jack, doing his divemaster course at our school, for dinner, and then went on to a bar for some (unsuccessful) darts playing with the locals.
*Last night's activities meant we had to get up early to do our dive homework (tut tut), and then we grabbed a brekkie of pineapple and honey roti (Malaysian pancake) before rocking up for our morning dives, both of them being shore dives. We kitted up and headed over to the jetty for our buoyancy dive, and it was so amazing how, once actually fully explained to us, and with proper control, you could actually master your buoyancy underwater, and manage to hover wherever you wanted. It was like something clicked, and now diving had gone from awesome, to absolutely unreal! This feeling was further emphasized on our second dive, the navigation dive, as we applied the buoyancy skills with a natural ease, whilst also mastering the use of the compass. We then went for lunch with Jack and spent the arvo on the beach, swimming, and dozing in hammocks, reading my book.
*As dusk approached we kitted up for our night dive, while the rest of the island was gearing up for the Salang beach party, as part of the Tioman dive festival. We walked down the jetty to enter the water from there and were greeted by a load of party goers that had caught the boat over from other beaches. Anyway, we entered just as the last slithers of sunlight were fading into oblivion, and found it to be quite relaxing diving at night, as if it was just us and the unspoken aquatic life in the whole ocean. Vine, the divemaster, pointed out all manner of aquatic life to us, including luminous plankton, an omninous looking stingray, a crab, and shrimp. The experience was completely unique and quite an honour really, and we emerged delighted with it all, and the fact that we'd passed our advanced course. It was starting to get pretty nippy though, so we ran back to the hut for a shower and change of clothes, ready to hit the beach party in celebration! We had a celebratory meal with Jack, Vine and Mazlan first, and then hit the bar for the obligatory game of round the clock darts, and then over to the beach where we were dancing and cartwheeling like lunatics around the fire to Metallica and Green Day (when the cantankerous sound system was working) with countless unknown Malay blokes.
*The party continued into the early hours at a bar up the other end of the beach that was open till god knows when. Saying that, the omninous rumble of thunder and the whistling of wind through the islands trees around 3am prompted me to make a dash for home, falsely believing that a great storm was about to break out. Oh well, it was good to stretch my legs for a bit anyway!
*There was muchos sleep to be had the next morning, followed by more lazing around on the beach, soaking up the sun, and swimming in the sea, hovering over the coral formations, hypnotized by the colourful fish darting around them. The water was so clear, and the experience so captivating that this amused us for hours on end. We made time to return to the dive centre and collect our certifications, and bumped into Ben and Keren, who we'd met on Koh Tao whilst doing our open water course. After our awesome experiences on the advanced course, we convinced them to do it aswell! They were somewhat more easily convinced given that they loved the trekking in Chiang Mai which was also on our reccomendation!
*The sunset was stunning that night, although I think it came out in the picture looking even better than I realized it looked at the time.
* sampled yet another Malaysian delicacy for dinner, and then went to watch The Longest Yard on the big screen at one of the restaurants with some of the crew.
*The next day, our last full day on both Tioman, and in Malaysia, and indeed Asia, we undertook a "round the island" tour, with our guide Terry, on his slightly vunerable looking boat. It took us a tumultuous 30 minutes to get to our first stop, Juara Beach, on the east side of the island, after passing miles of coastline completely unhabitable due to the rocky terrain protruding out into the side, leaving no conceviable building sites. The beach was indeed beautiful yet deserted, lined with palm trees and unripe coconuts. We swam out to the rocks and briefly climbed aboard to chat to an English bloke who was fishing for his tea. The island wilderness was quite chilling, it was like a bit of a ghost town over there, yet the beach and surrounds were so idyllic. I can only think it was the hassle of getting there that caused its loneliness.
*Anyway, back on board with Terry, the next stop was Mutuk waterfall. The cliffs surrounding this place were eerily mirred by mist, much like on Lost, and the track up to the waterfall itself also resembled a ghost town somewhat, with abandoned huts and what not. It was more of a rocky waterfall than the Thai ones we visited, with the water winding its way through the rocks instead of free-falling. We took the liberty of having a little dip before hopping back on board.
*Somewhat starving at this point, the next stop demanded our attention nevertheless. At Ringgis Island we went snorkelling and it was astounding beautiful - the best coral I've ever seen, entirely mesmerizing. The myriad of colours, and variety of coral and fish on display was otherworldly. The crocodile-nosed needlefish were the best - swimming precariously close to the surface, I was perpetually scared of running into one of them and being sliced in two! I spent quite a lot of time duck diving down to get a close up of the coral (which my ears didn't like!), my favourite being the black stuff with electric yellow ridges, and the bright blue flower-esque small coral resting on rocks. There was a lot of fire coral, and all so shallow so the vis was outstanding, perfect for snorkelling, although I would have loved to have dived there and just circled around the coral, close up. The schools of fish were also incredible - simulating a kalidescope-esque image in which they circled around us, only to universally flutter away if we made a sharp movement.
*Finally Terry took us for some lunch on ABC beach and by this point I realized it had been absolutely roasting all day and I was terribly sunburnt. The next place round the coast was Tekek - site of the only cash machine on the island, which I got off to use - where we saw a plane land, which was quite scary as it didn't look like the place was big enough to have a runway!
*The last stop was Monkey Bay again, although this time seen in a whole new dimension, underwater. Terry dropped us off far out in the bay and we snorkelled our way back past more coral. This coral was incomparable to that at Ringiss Island, but that point was negated by my spotting of a hawksbill turtle, which I proceeded to follow around for about 20 minutes, amazed at its appearance in such shallow water. It seemed unaware of my presence although I was really close, which I found quite strange. It stopped for a while, nesting in some coral, at which point I tried to find Lucy to show her, but no such luck. A glorious rainbow then appeared across the bay, which culminated in somewhat less glory in the form of showers, meaning Terry summoned us to return to the boat and then Salang Beach. Indeed, no sooner than we pulled up on the beach it started absolutely chucking it down with vicious thunder and lightening ensuing. The poor weather meant our last night was somewhat of a wash out in every sense, with most places being closed, and most people having retreated indoors, but this was immaterial as we'd had such a great day, for only 80 Ringit aswell.
*Monday was our last day in Asia, which began with us packing our things up whilst watching the sunrise over Tioman, and dreaming of Oz, yet being sad to leave Tioman, where we'd had such a great time and met so many people. We bought some green coconut pancakey things for brekkie and ate them on the 7.30 ferry back, which, being the slow boat, was a lot more comfortable than the one on the way over!

*Pulau Tioman is a small island located 32 km. Minang Cove, on Pulau Tiomanoff the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia and is some 39 km long and 12 km wide. Its beaches were depicted as Bali Hai in the 1958 movie, South Pacific. In the 1970s, TIME magazine selected Tioman as one of the world's most beautiful islands. Who were we to argue? Tioman Island had the added attraction of snorkelling off the beach and Minang Cove Resort seemed to promote snorkelling as well as being in a reasonable price range.
*The flight to Pulau Tioman was from Seletar Airport in Singapore. This secondary international airport is so small that we were only the second fare our taxi driver has ever delivered there. It turned out to be smaller than Tauranga Airport (and much smaller than Palmerston North International Airport). So how small was Berjaya Air's plane going to be? Turned out there were plenty of spare seats with only 10 of us on board.
*The next real excitement was the (international) landing strip at Tioman which Brian mistook as an agricultural strip for truly tiny planes, or as possibly even unused. He was impressed when the plane did a steep 180' turn and landed on a short runway with hills at each end.
*We then had to go through immigration into Malaysia, a booth on the veranda of the airport, then pay our dues for entering their national park. A well dressed welcoming man asked if we were heading for the Japa Mala resort, but sadly no - that was the more expensive option and we were flashpacking. We were met by a young local boy who was very helpful, but seemed not to speak much English and was quite shy.
*We were in for a 25 minute boat ride passing all the other smart resorts, making us feel a bit like passing the Ibis on our way to Hotel Central in Casablanca. We were met at Minang Cove by a friendly pommy manager with a laid back demeanour, and then showed a spacious tidy room sitting right over the shore. His parting comment was "we don't have room keys here; no-one's going anywhere." We felt relaxed already.
*The snorkelling was magical and just off shore from the beach we saw a big turtle. Another day Jen was spooked by oversized jellyfish with a body than a head, and on that day Brian snorkelled over some black tipped sharks. Whilst there Jen did her first ever scuba dive which inspite of some equalising issues, was great fun. Pity we couldn't catch the action on an underwater camera.
*Feeling guilty about our fitness, we started out on the "4 hour return" walk through the jungle to the next village or kampong, then onto the Tioman Waterfall. The walk to the kampong was in fact very overgrown, had broken bridges, and we did not really want to have to do the return trip. We spotted iguanas, and other exotic fauna but not the snakes that our fellow guests saw the next day. When we did the walk Jen didn't know there were 24 different species of snakes on Pulau Tioman. The happy ending to the story is that at the waterfall we met a group from Japa Mala, the smarter resort, who were clearly getting very well looked after, and hitching a boat ride back seemed like the only sensible solution.
*Just a quick post entry for Pulau Redang, off Terangganu, Malaysia.

Started as a long (understatement) night ride from Golden Mile Complex all the way to Terangganu. That ass cramping, body twisting 9-10hour ride. But it was a good night ride, with good company to chit chat with and eventually the darkness of the night and a sky full of stars.

"i glanced out my window into the darkness and upwards i turned my gaze to lay eyes on countless stars dotting the blackness that is the sky and in this moment i wish only to share it with you. for every wish of happiness i've ever made upon the stars, every one of them came true in you."

Dawn arrived, we arrived and sappy feelings aside, the group of us had breakfast then headed on the bumpiest, most overloaded boat ride to the island. My amazing intelligence aside, I bummed my friend aside so that I could sit on the front of the boat. And in that 40 minute ride, I managed to learn some common sense. That is, everytime the boat crashes against a wave, droplets or splashes of water will make their way upwards and onto the unsuspecting front passenger. And so i ended my little boat ride a little (much) saltier than when i began the ride.

Fast forwarding many parts, we managed to do 3 snorkles.

The first comprises me swimming off alone as far as I could searching for the elusive turtles (which i've come to feel is just a scam). But I went to redang determined to see turtles out in the open, considering i missed seeing turtles twice at the great barrier reef the last time around. So there I was, terribly frightened of the unknown that is the sea, looking around hoping to spot some signs of life. I started the snorkle with some harmless flip flap of my legs, visiting sparodic patches of corals inhabited by passing fishes. But I didnt quite go all the way to redang to see fishes whom I can visit at my nearest aquarium. Sound wisdom: turtles are shy creatures and definately wouldnt be lurking in the vacinity. And so I headed to the outskirts of the reef. Besides some passerby fishes, i pretty much saw about 2billion grains of white sand and blue waters surrounding me. Just as I was getting desperate floating atop the waters looking around hoping for a turtle, I spotted something from the corner of my eye. I turned and low and behold, the god damn it biggest fish i have ever ever ever seen swam merely 3meters away from me. A streamline white body around the size of, well, me. That after a few seconds, quickly disappeared out of my visibility. And as much as I hate to seem cowardly, I freaked out. Lets call it piss in your pants kind of freak out. I've never quite imagined fishes to be anything beyond those small little things we keep in fish tanks and (sorry) fillets on my dinner plate. Out in the ocean, fishes appear to be another game altogether. I instantaneously stuck my head out of the water, spotted the next nearest person and swam like crazy. And lets just say the nearest person wasn't exactly very near. And so there I was in the middle of the blue, feeling so alone and vulnerable, swimming as hard as I could for shelter. Occassionally I peeked my head underwater just to make sure I was alone, or at least appear to be.

The four of us, decided to tackle this mountain known as Gunung Tahan in Pahang West Malaysia out of impulse some years ago. Gosh, we did not expect the exhilarating adventure that is to follow on our journey to the roof of West Malaysia.

Firstly, the 7,200 feet mountain resides in the virgin rain forest of one of the world's oldest undisturbed jungle and ecosystems that have existed here for more than 130 million years. The jungles were untouced by galziers during the ice age. This rain forest jungle mountain range is part of the Taman Negara nature reserve (there are jungle luxury resorts and hotels there) and is a protected area.

Grammatophyllum Speciosum, the world's largest orchid, carnivorous pitcher plants and some of the world's tallest trees thrive in this nature reserve. This jungle is also home to many rare and almost extinct animals such as tigers, leopards, black panthers, elephants and the Sumatran rhinoceros.

Getting to Gunung Tahan Pahang

We took a 4 hour train ride from Singapore to the town of Juruntut, a small town in central West Malaysia and from Juruntut, another 2 hours riding up Tembeling River in a long boat sometimes having to shoot some mild rapids. The river journey brings us deeper and deeper into the jungle and all forms of modern civilisation ends here.

Jungle sounds like bird's tweeting, monkeys hooting and other animals and insects sound envelopes us. Yes, we are now in a tropical jungle. On the river banks, we passed by herds of wild water buffaloes, elephants and the occasional giant monitor lizard (Iguana) basking in the sand.

Soon we arrived at the nature parks headquarter. There we book a local guide for the beginning of our climb the next morning. Although Gunung Tahan is not exactly a very tall mountain, getting to the peak is not as easy as strolling in the park because we have to tackle a few other mountains and cross several rivers before we can reach its breathtaking peak.

Encounter with Orang Asli - Malaysian Jungle people

We set out just after dawn on day one. What we did not expect was the constant up on down on numerous hills that leaves us gasping for breath. As we trudge along, we noticed two Orang Asli (Malaysian jungle aborigine dwellers) were following us.

We were a little apprehensive at first because these jungle people were carrying weapons. One had a poisonous blowpipe slung across his back and another carried an axe in his hand. Our guide sensing our apprehension and whispered something to me. Complying with his instruction, I opened up my haversack and took out some chocolates and cigarettes and gave them to the jungle natives. They took the gifts without a word and disappeared into the jungle.

We thought they were gone, but they were not. We could hear the sounds of an axe chopping away in the undergrowth. In about 10 minutes later, the two jungle men appeared again with five beautiful rattan canes. Those canes were meant to be our walking sticks. They gave it to us in exchange for he chocolates and cigarettes. We indeed do appreciate those canes as it made our trek in the difficult terrain much more comfortable. That is not to be the last we heard from our two jungle friends.

Ambushed By Orang Asli - Malaysian jungle tribesmen

That night we built a campfire by the riverbank and was cooking dinner when all of a sudden, the jungle lighted up. About thirty Orang Asli appeared from the jungle some of them carrying flaming fire torches. Our guide signal to us to give more chocolates and cigarettes to them of which we complied immediately.

All of a sudden, one of the jungle man started barking up a tree. Then he did something that had us gasp in astonishment. He plunged his fiery torch into a bee hive without flinching. After he burnt most of the bees dead, he just grab the hive and threw it down. Our guide, as if on cue just went to the hive, picked it up and break some portions off and offering us to eat it.

Even from the dim campfire flickering light, I could see burnt bees and larvaes on the portions. Well, this is an adventure trek isn't it, so what the heck, let's be adventurous on food as well. So I gingerly took a piece and bit it. Omigosh... the honey that oozed out of the crust was simply heavenly. It was the most delicious honey that I had ever tasted.

As suddenly as the natives appeared, they very quickly melted back into the dark jungle and we heard no more of them hence.

Monkey Eating Fish?

The next two days were spent tackling more mountains and crossing twenty seven rivers. Fighting off blood sucking damned leeches. In certain parts of the river where the water is deep, swimming in the wild are expensive ornamental fishes such as the arrowana.

Our guide told us that there are giant catfishes as big as humans and these fishes have eyes so huge that they will actually stare monkeys up on trees overhanging the river. The monkeys will be so terrified or dazed and fall into the river making easy prey for these fresh water giant catfish.

Encounter with a big cat - Was it a tiger?

On the last night before the summit ascent the next day, we pitched our tent on two humps called Wray's camp. Our guide, who normally sleeps by the campfire outside the tent insisted that he sleeps with us that night. We guessed that he must be cold because we are now on the upper portion of the mountain range. But on after thought, could it be because he was afraid to sleep alone in tiger country? That we will never know.

As usual, after dinner we will leave our trash leftovers alone and will only clean them up in the morning when there is sufficient light. All of us were snoring heavily from a hard day of climbing when I heard some noise like someone was rummaging our trash. I took out my jungle knife, unzipped and tent and was about to step out to investigate when I heard a loud big jungle cat snarl. Not exactly a roar which tigers and lions make but unmistakable enough to identify it as a sound that big jungle cats like tigers, leopards or panthers make.

I instinctively stepped back into the tent, crawled under my sleeping bag and zipped myself in tight. The next morning when I asked around, nobody seemed to have heard anything. However I noticed our guide was quieter than usual. Although he said that he did not know anything, I somehow sensed that there was more than what he was willing to tell. Or, was I dreaming after all? It was too real to be a dream. Till this day, I am still not sure.

Garden of Eden in Gunung Tahan?

Oh what a beautiful morning as the song goes. It was indeed. Today will be the final push to Gunung Tahan summit. We will be on the highest part of Malaysia. As we get nearer to the peak, the vegetation got thinner and thinner. Taking over from the rain forest type of vegetation are prairies and prairies of multi colored beautiful wild orchids. Yes, the wild orchids covered the landscape and we felt as if we have found the Garden Of Eden.

To add to the beautiful sight, instead of ugly stones and rocks, the entire landscape was strewn with crystal like transparent pebbles. It was as if the fields of orchids were growing from diamonds. It was indeed a breathtaking sight.

On top of that, we reached the summit on time and took in the fantastic view. So beautiful it was really like a dream.

Now that we have been up there, the journey back will begin soon. However, there was not much to blog about because we took the same route back and nothing really worth mentioning happened.
*My trip to Berkelah Falls – the best camping trip ever!!

Situated in Pahang, Malaysia, Berkelah Falls is a cascade of waterfalls just about 50km away from Kuantan, heading towards Maran. We took off around 6am and it took us about 2 hours to get from KL to our destination.

From there, we parked our cars at the food stalls near the main road and the owners there run a lorry service which ferry passengers to the base of the waterfalls at a nominal price between RM5 to RM10 per head depending on the driver.

The trail from the base of the waterfall to the top of the camping grounds isn't all that far but the huge rocks and confined spaces we had to maneuver our way across made it quite treacherous for us. You need to be quite nimble and obviously quite fit in order to stay on track.

But as we made our ascent, the waterfalls came into view and all that effort to come this far was worth minute of it.

We were tempted to stop and dip ourselves silly in the tempting waters but as the saying goes, all good things come to those who wait. We soon took a break at the first camping ground and without much hesitation; we got from our full gear with backpack to our bathers in less than 2 minutes.

Splash!

A handful of kampung kids were already there having fun frolicking in the waters, laughing and clowning around as if the place belonged to them. Totally carefree. We were no different.

Having rejuvenated ourselves in the cool crisp waters, we continued upwards to our designated camp site.

About 45 minutes later, we finally arrived. We were fortunate enough to find a good ground to pitch our tents as well as ground sheet for the food. After a nice hearty lunch, it's off to the waters again. The waters were even more spectacular this time round. And the best part is: We had the whole place to ourselves.
*Berkelah Falls, a lovely series of waterfalls, is located in Kuantan, the state of Pahang, Peninsula Malaysia. Heard from them that it's 6 stories high!

This is my first overseas trip without my parents or relatives, so I really enjoyed the freedom! Though the heavy rain made us gave up climbing to the main falls, I'm still glad that I had a chance to sit under a smaller waterfall and let the water rushing down my head :P That's cool! They said that the main falls has a swimming lake the size of an Olympic pool! It's ok...I got to swim a little at the smaller one :p The water is super cold....I was shivering while playing with the water :p
*We met up at the jetty in Bagan Dato. This would be our departure point to Pulau Jarak. After introducing ourselves, we then proceeded to load our stuff on the boat.
Upon reaching our first stop which was Hutan Melintang, we wasted no time an proceeded to drop our jig into the water. I was the first to be rewarded with a strike. I had a double hookup and after a brief fight, I landed Giant Trevally weighing about 5kg each. My freind then got another hookup after that. It was a shark but unfortunately, he lost the fish at boat side. He did manage to get grouper after that as a consolation.
The action had died down and less hits were registered after that. It was during this time that I had a solid hook up on my rod. Prior to this, I had 3 strikes but all of them didn't register any solid hook up. This time, I had a solid hookup. My tackle setup was an Abu Garcia Conolon PE 3-5 jigging rod, Daiwa Freams 4500 J with a 150g Ofmer jig. The fight laster about 10 minutes. It was a see saw battle. I would gain some line and then proceed to lose more line as the fish makes its run. At one stage I almost gave up the fight. The fight gave my back a massive strain. Sweat was pouring from my forehead and my right arm was aching. In the end, after what felt like a lifetime for me, the fish was successfully landed and Captain Ah Ho confirmed that the GT weighted approximately 10kg. I had a the Rapala Scale with me, and when I tried to weigh the fish, the scale reached its limit. My scale was a 9kg scale and the fish weight more than what the scale was intended to take.
We moved spots a few times and the biggest fish for this trip was caught during that time. It was around 5.30 when my friend got a hit on his jig. It was a massive hit. He was at the front of the boat at that time. As he was fighting the fish, we all made way for him. All of us were more focused on his catch. From the looks of it, the fish that was on the other end of his line was a biggie. The fight lasted for more that 15 minutes. We were all making fun of him and at the same time we were shouting encouragement at him. At the end of the day, a massive 12 kg GT was subdued and landed.
The next morning, we all tried to fish around the waters of Pulau Sembilan but we didn't register any catch. Soon it was time to leave and head back to the Bagan Dato Jetty. We arrived at the jetty at approximately 12 noon.

introduction
*Sedim river with its 15km stretch of fast-flowing rapids has been tested out by international extreme sports experts. It has been listed as the top five best rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in the world. With this credit, Sedim river has now earned its reputation as an international whitewater rafting destination, one of the very few in the world.
*The Sedim river white water rapid recreation Park near Karangan, Kulim is a popular spot for whitewater rafting. It is considered by local rafting enthusiasts as the equivalent of Selangor river's whitewater rafting.
*There are 24 rapids along Sedim river, such as Salak Drop, Triple Rapid, Kasai Drop, Wall Drop, Lower Head DAm, Kawah Rapid, Jelutong Rapid, Rodeo Rapid, Slip Lip Rapid and Cyclone Hile.
*Sedim Rapid Kayaking Challenge was held here in 1999.
*Danger, the strong water current is not suitable for swimming, despite the danger, the recreation forest is teaming with visitors every weekend. Sometimes, the narrow dirt path leading to the rapids is congested with vehicles. The recreational park under Kulim Forestry Department, has basic infrastructure and facilities such as chalets and food stalls.
*Tree Top Walk, this is a RM6 million tree top walk built by the Federal Government, This walk is 950m long which is the longest in the world.
*For those who like jungle trekking, there are a few trails that lead to Gunung Inas, Gunung Bintang Utara, Gunung Bintang and Banjaran Bintang.

*Sedim river also offers something other than whitewater rafting,
**tubing - you can flow down the river with a tyre, alone, tubing is very scary and fun
**high jumping - you will have to jump from one storey high rock mountain into the cool water.
